Organizational Tips -
Before you Declutter and How to Maintain this?

Before you Declutter

The # 1 problem area in a house is clothing clutter.

The next problem areas are kids’ toys and paperwork.

Ask yourself these questions when beginning to declutter:

  • What is the life that I’m wanting?  Is this space helping me achieve my goals?
  • What are the zones or activities that will happen in this space?
  • Is that item that you got on sale a bargain if you never use it?
  • What works in this space and what doesn’t?
  • Is the item useful or do you enjoy its beauty?  Do you give your items the love and respect it deserves?
  • Have you used this item in the past year?

Where do I get rid of items?

Since you only have so much space available to you, most declutter requires getting rid of items, here are some suggested locations to get rid of them:

  • Donation Centers: Goodwill, Arc, Salvation Army.  Some of these will come to pick up large items.  Many have convenient drop off locations.
  • Daycare Facilities love toys that are in good condition and clothes for accidents.
  • Churches and Church Daycare Centers need books and toys
  • On-line auction sites, such as Ebay or companies that will do it for you
  • Give to family or friends - only if they want it.
  • Yard Sale - if you have enough itesms then have a yard sale.  They can be a lot of work but can be very profitable.
  • Physical or electronic Bulletin Boards are a great way to get rid of items, make a profit and usually easy to get the item to the person vs. Ebay and having to ship it.
  • Recycle - Many items can be recycled such as magaxines, empty boxes, etc.
  • Trash - Don't be afraid to throw stuff out.  The trash bag is your friend.

When purpose is lost – the clutter follows!

How do I Maintain this?

  • When one item comes in one item goes out
  • Don't go to sleep until your home is picked up (not necessarily clean)
  • Pick up an area such as a drawer, mail, etc. during a commercial
  • Go through the whole house at least 1 time a year
  • Keep the kitchen sink empty and clean at all times

 Keep up the good work!
